Rewriting The Oeuvre: Raymond Queneau And The Art Of Translation, Christopher Clarke 2020 The Graduate Center, City University of New York

Rewriting The Oeuvre: Raymond Queneau And The Art Of Translation, Christopher Clarke

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

81818app手机版下载While the literary oeuvre of French author Raymond Queneau (1903-1976) has been extensively studied, his work as a literary translator has been largely overlooked. Queneau was a prominent member of the French literary avant-garde, but also a literary translator for two decades (1934-1953), and his writing was greatly influenced and impacted by his readings and translations of Anglophone writers. This dissertation provides insight into the role of translation in his conception of writing and language, and the inseparability of the different facets of his career as a writer, literary translator, and publisher. I examine his personal linguistic and literary history ...

A Rendezvous With Revolution: How Contemporary Female Singers Have Transformed Egypt, Summer El-Shahawy 2020 University of Arkansas

A Rendezvous With Revolution: How Contemporary Female Singers Have Transformed Egypt, Summer El-Shahawy

The Macksey Journal

In this research project on contemporary female singers in Egypt, I will reveal the creative processes behind alternative female musicians' sounds and explore how female musicians who inhabit the fringes of underground musical niches contribute to social changes and impact gender roles in the Egyptian music domain. Over time, Egypt has undergone multiple waves of radical social and political change, including the 2011 revolution and the ousting of President Mubarak. The political and social changes that occurred during this pivotal event have increased the importance of music as an avenue for protest and expression and have allowed more space for ...

The People Who “Burn”: “Communication,” Unity, And Change In Belarusian Discourse On Public Creativity, Anton Dinerstein

Doctoral Dissertations

81818app手机版下载The main intellectual problem I address in this study is how everyday communication activates the relationship between creativity, conflict, and change. More specifically, I look at how the communication of creativity becomes a process of transformation, innovation, and change and how people are propelled to create through everyday communication practices in the face of conflict and opposition. To approach this problem, I use the case of communication in modern-day Belarus to show how creativity becomes a vehicle for and a source of new social and cultural routines among the independent grassroots communities and initiatives in Minsk.

On one level, I ...

Cross-Modal Distraction On Simultaneous Translation: Language Interference In Spanish-English Bilinguals, Violet Young 2020 University of Central Florida

Cross-Modal Distraction On Simultaneous Translation: Language Interference In Spanish-English Bilinguals, Violet Young

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ)

Bilingualism has been studied extensively in multiple disciplines, yet we are still unsure how exactly bilinguals think. Though the existence of a bilingual advantage is debated, this effect has been shown in tasks using selective attention. These tasks study the effects of language interference, where two types of interference are observed: interlingual (between-languages) and intralingual (within one language). This study examines language interference in Spanish-English bilinguals using an auditory-visual simultaneous translation experimental setup. Sixteen college English monolinguals and 17 college Spanish-English bilinguals were tested. Participants translated or repeated words displayed on a screen while ignoring distractor words played through headphones ...

Bernard Palissy: Early Career - Securing Patronage And Mimicking Nature In A Moment Of Crisis, Karissa Bailey

LSU Master's Theses

81818app手机版下载Early in 1562, France was experiencing a state of high religious tension between Protestants and Catholics that would precipitate the outbreak of the Religious Wars on March 1. A week before, Bernard Palissy, a Huguenot potter, wrote a letter to his Catholic patron from prison inBordeaux where he was being held on charges associated with an iconoclastic incident in his home city of Saintes. This letter would later be published as a dedication letter for the pamphlet Architecture et Ordonnance, which featured the description of a grotto commissioned by Anne de Montmorency, Palissy’s patron, seven years earlier. This thesis ...

Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto 2020 California State University - San Bernardino

Kinesthetic Language: A Dialect Of Kinesics, Terrill Suzanne Corletto

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Human communication requires the disciplines regarding physical fitness, codified language, and the performing arts to overlap, and exist symbiotically. Within the realm of artistic performance, the three disciplines working together deliver a deliberate message in a way unique to performing artists. The general tendency to compartmentalize sports, communication, and the performing arts into their pigeonhole categories of Kinesiology, Linguistics, and Theatre Arts is impractical, particularly for performing artists simply because all of the disciplines are mutually dependent in the context of all kinesthetic communications.

The purpose of this paper is to define and discuss81818app手机版下载 several concepts and the ways in ...

From The Unspoken To The Verbalized: Different Ways Of Communication And Their Relationship To Culture In A Traditional Lakota Narrative "Ikto Na Wičhá Ha Kiŋ”, Or “Ikto And The Racoon Skin”, Liliana R. Boladz-Nekipelov

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This master’s thesis is a discourse analysis of a traditional Lakota story, " Iktó na wičhá ha kiŋ”, or “Ikto and the Racoon Skin”, one of the 64 stories included in the “Dakota Texts”, which were collected by Ella Deloria at three Lakota reservations in 1930s as a part of Franz Boas’ language documentation project. The thesis is also an attempt to examine different communicative strategies employed within the narrative and their relationship to culture, as well as the relationship between form and the transfer of meaning and culture and meaning. The analysis is conducted using Dell Hymes’ ethnographic approach ...

The Contradictory Interpretations Of Genesis 4:7—Ellen G. White Versus The Theology Of Ordination Study Committee Position 1, Michael F. Younker 2020 Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research of the General Conference

The Contradictory Interpretations Of Genesis 4:7—Ellen G. White Versus The Theology Of Ordination Study Committee Position 1, Michael F. Younker

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

81818app手机版下载Reflecting a widespread tension throughout the world of biblical interpretation, Ellen G. White and the Theology of Ordination Study Committee Position 1 (TOSC1) propose contradictory interpretations of Genesis 4:7. Given the content of Genesis 4:7, which addresses issues relating to psychology and authority, which are often connected with Genesis 3:16 and gender, and its use by the TOSC1, the promotion of the TOSC1 interpretation of Genesis 4:7 within Seventh-day Adventist circles as well as broader Christianity will encourage further unpleasant confrontations concerning the issues related to the psychology of gender and authority in Scripture.

Linguistics Of Medical Terminology As Applied To Students Of The Medical Field, Megan O'Connell

Honors Projects

In modern times, global connectivity is prioritized especially in the medical field and related professions. A common understanding between professionals in the field is based on a shared language and terminology. As it follows that students of health sciences should be well-versed in the language of their field of study, it is beneficial for them to have an education in Latin and Greek, ancient languages which are the foundation of medical terminology. This research provides an analysis of the relevance of an education in ancient languages to students in healthcare majors. It ultimately illustrates the importance of an education blended ...

Dum Conderet Urbem: Aeneas's Development And The Personal Cost Of War, Charlotte Skolasky 2020 Bryn Mawr College

Dum Conderet Urbem: Aeneas's Development And The Personal Cost Of War, Charlotte Skolasky

2020 JHU Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium

81818app手机版下载Vergil begins and ends his epic poem, The Aeneid, using the verb "condere", meaning "to hide or bury". In the poem, "condere" refers to the act of establishing the long-lasting foundations of the city of Rome. In the final lines of the poem, it describes Aeneas killing the Italian Turnus, and thus destroying the last obstacle to his destiny of establishing a great city. My research examines the uses of "condere" throughout the poem, and explores the word's journey from a positive, generative meaning to describing an act of violence. Tracking the evolution of "condere" confronts such issues as ...

Govoreeting With Lewdies: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of A Clockwork Orange And Its Translations Across Media And Language, Willie Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much linguistic research has been done on the fictional argot of A Clockwork Orange, known as Nadsat, but few efforts have been made to expand beyond the classification and analysis of Nadsat. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper looks at the overarching discourse of A Clockwork Orange81818app手机版下载 and aims to answer three questions: What exigencies and discourses inform the creation of these works? What techniques and power structures are employed in the construction of these works? How do these works shape or attempt to shape the discourse? To answer these questions, I look at three instances of the discourse: Burgess ...

Interviews With Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Cormac Coyle

Honors College

In 2016, a collection of previously unreleased audio-recorded interviews and dialogues with phenomenological philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty were transcribed and published in French in Entretiens avec Georges Charbonnier: et autres dialogues, 1946-1959. Here, to my knowledge, I have translated three of those interviews into English for the very first time. Given that these interviews were recorded for broadcast to the general public, they provide an accessible entry point into some of the thoughts of Merleau-Ponty. The first interview that I have translated is Merleau-Ponty explaining his research in Philosophy. The second interview discusses Husserl, the concept of lived experience, and the ...
