The Positiveness Of Imagination In Spinoza’S Epistemology, Luis Ramos-Alarcón 2020 UACM 81818app手机版下载

The Positiveness Of Imagination In Spinoza’S Epistemology, Luis Ramos-Alarcón

Western Ontario Early Modern Philosophy (WOEMP) Online Event

81818app手机版下载For Spinoza’s epistemology, an image is an idea that represents an external body as actually existent. This kind of knowledge is the only source of inadequate knowledge, falsity, and error. On the contrary, reason is adequate knowledge because it comprehends common notions, i.e, properties of different things. Intuition is also adequate knowledge because it conceives formal essences of singular things. The main example is the genetic definition of a sphere, an adequate knowledge form by the power of thinking of the mind, without regard to existing extramental spheres. From these differences, some scholars conclude that imagination is always ...

Developing A Systematic Approach For Teaching Beginning Improvisation Using The Concert Percussion Ensemble, Ian McClaflin 2020 The University of Southern Mississippi 81818app手机版下载

Developing A Systematic Approach For Teaching Beginning Improvisation Using The Concert Percussion Ensemble, Ian Mcclaflin

Dissertations

81818app手机版下载Typically, when studying percussion at a University, a student is required to be proficient at multiple aspects of percussion (snare drum, mallet keyboards, drum set, hand drumming, etc.) and work through multiple method books and solos on the different instruments. This often leaves little to no room for the study of improvisation on their instrument.

Examined in this study are the following points pertaining to the state of teaching improvisation:

  • There is an apparent lack of improvisation in the classroom
  • Teachers often feel unprepared in teaching improvisation
  • Improvisation is most commonly associated with jazz
  • Both teachers and students tend to ...

Introduction To The Dorrite Women Letter Collection, Erik J. Chaput, Ph.D 2020 Providence College

Introduction To The Dorrite Women Letter Collection, Erik J. Chaput, Ph.D

Dorr Scholarship

In this introductory essay to the Dorrite Women Letter Collection, historian Erik Chaput outlines the significant role women played in the Dorr Rebellion. The openly partisan activism of Dorrite women highlights an understudied aspect of antebellum America. Much of the scholarship on women in the antebellum period focuses on abolitionism and connections to other Whig Party reform efforts. The vast majority of women associated with Thomas Dorr, however, were open supporters of the Democratic Party and were not connected with Rhode Island abolitionist societies. In the essay, Chaput highlights the activism of a key group of Dorrite women, including Ann ...

Lack Of Consensus On An Aging Biology Paradigm? A Global Survey Reveals An Agreement To Disagree, And The Need For An Interdisciplinary Framework, Alan A. Cohen, Anne M. Bronikowski, Luigi Ferrucci, et al. 2020 University of Sherbrooke

Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology Publications

At a recent symposium on aging biology, a debate was held as to whether or not we know what biological aging is. Most of the participants were struck not only by the lack of consensus on this core question, but also on many basic tenets of the field. Accordingly, we undertook a systematic survey of our 71 participants on key questions that were raised during the debate and symposium, eliciting 37 responses. The results confirmed the impression from the symposium: there is marked disagreement on the most fundamental questions in the field, and little consensus on anything other than the ...

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker 2020 CUNY Queens College 81818app手机版下载

Elizabeth Kent’S New Tales Of Botanical Friendship, Leila Walker

Publications and Research

Elizabeth Kent has been considered a rather minor figure in the Leigh Hunt circle. However, this examination of her previously unknown children’s tales illuminates how Kent’s generic crossings establish a common emphasis on observation in the realms of botany, pedagogy, and poetry while suggesting that what happens beyond the observable world might be equally generative. Taken as a whole, Kent’s work constitutes a previously unacknowledged challenge to the Cockney School’s almost fetishistic attachment to the social. The identification of New Tales brings into focus Kent’s efforts to systematize friendship through her writing and clarifies her ...

The Macksey Journal

81818app手机版下载The prevalence of domestic violence (DV) is higher among South Asian population living in the US as compared to the general population. For example, in the US, the lifetime prevalence of DV is around 20% (Devries et al., 2013), however, within the South Asian population domestic violence, accounting for physical and sexual abuse, is a staggering 40% (Mahapatra, 2012; Raj & Silverman, 2002). This research study explores the lived experiences, supports, barriers, and access to services among South Asian survivors of domestic violence. Using an in-depth interviewing method with eight women, this study explores the cultural, social, financial, immigration related barriers ...

A Critical History Of Preservation: A Study Of Preservation Practices And Evolutions, Garrett Channell 2020 Roanoke College

A Critical History Of Preservation: A Study Of Preservation Practices And Evolutions, Garrett Channell

The Macksey Journal

Archivists and librarians have a vital position in preserving materials for future generations. This is an important topic for historians, who are constantly needing access to primary sources. With this project, I intend to study the history of preservation in libraries, archives, and museums. I will explore what various methods of preservation have been used over the past few decades. I will study which of these methods have become popular, which ones have become outdated, and what institutions have used which methods. My project will be split into two parts, the first being a literature review of various books written ...

A Case Study Of David Barclay As A Malevolent Slave Trading Banker And A Benevolent Abolitionist, Anny Lu

The Macksey Journal

In the eighteenth century, the British Quaker community faced a dilemma regarding their morals to pioneer the abolition movement and their economic interests to facilitate the slave trade. Members of the Society of Friends were expected to be established bankers, and many of them gave out loans to slave traders. At the same time, they were pacifist pioneers of the abolition movement in Britain. However, Friends who did not meet these expectations were disowned. This research analyzes how British Quakers of this time upheld both positions of this paradox through a case study of David Barclay, founder of Barclays Bank ...

Willing Paradise: Death, Desire, And Shame In Emily Dickinson's Poetry, Ashley N. Etter 2020 College of Saint Scholastica 81818app手机版下载

Willing Paradise: Death, Desire, And Shame In Emily Dickinson's Poetry, Ashley N. Etter

The Macksey Journal

81818app手机版下载Emily Dickinson’s poetry engages, above all, with questions about selfhood and identity, anticipating the postmodern notion that the self emerges in response to the other. Dickinson individuates the other as Death, a male suitor at once alluring and repulsive, who stands in relationship with the self as the “enigmatic, inscrutable” other, to use Judith Butler’s terms. Death’s representations, then, are multitudinous: he presents himself alternately as a lover, a friend, and a foe, never the same, yet always demanding a response. Confronted with this overwhelming ethical responsibility, Dickinson’s (often ungendered) speakers suffer deeply—psychologically and physically ...

A Dream Fulfilled By Some...The Social Injustices Of In Vitro Fertilization, Briana Hocker

The Macksey Journal

Conception is a dream sought by many parents as infertility has plagued some women, yet this goal can be obtained through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This article will explore the reasons as to why this dream is not always fulfilled due to society. Many parents are turned away from Artificial Reproductive Technologies (ART), such as IVF, due to income, sexuality, and the lack of insurance coverage. Only the affluent can afford this procedure because of the hefty price tag(s) and obstacles that accompany IVF, such as not being available to single women or same sex couples. Lastly, most state ...

Assembling The Pieces Of Personhood In Anne Carson's Nox, Rachel A. Seitz 2020 Illinois State University

Assembling The Pieces Of Personhood In Anne Carson's Nox, Rachel A. Seitz

The Macksey Journal

Life writing traditionally seeks to sort out confusion, trauma, identity, or to serve as memento; in Anne Carson’s Nox, many of these parameters are met while others are broken. I examine the modes by which Nox violates expectations of the genre through her highly marked text, fragmented imagery, and Latin translation, such that the text could more properly be called epitaph rather than narrative. The text was crafted as a scrapbook to honor Carson’s deceased, estranged brother, with whom her relationship was complicated due to his absence. Because Nox primarily focuses on the remnants of his life rather ...
