Senior Honors Theses

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation studies the current Spanish economic, political, and social crisis and its representations through apocalyptic imaginaries. I seek to establish a fundamental political and cultural distinction between two models of these imaginaries traceable in representations of Madrid. On one hand, it looks at cultural discourses that display catastrophist projections of the present and the future, insisting on alarmistic and deterministic messages. On the other hand, it looks at other discourses that subvert this representation of the capitalist crisis as the end of the world, shifting the symbolic value of the apocalyptic imaginaries towards figurations of the end of capitalism ...

How The Notion Of Honor In "Bodas De Sangre" Can Help Reinterpret Cases Like "La Manada", Graceanne LaCombe 2020 Louisiana State University

How The Notion Of Honor In "Bodas De Sangre" Can Help Reinterpret Cases Like "La Manada", Graceanne Lacombe

The Macksey Journal

This essay will delve into the idea that Bodas de sangre, a play written by Federico Garcia Lorca in the early 20th century, still serves as a relevant discussion when determining how gender and societal pressures can correspond to the development of issues in modern-day Spain. It will chronicle a fairly new rape case, referred to as La manada81818app手机版下载, that initiated a call for reformation of the lingering misogynistic mindsets in some parts of the Spanish judicial system. By analyzing the reaction of the public after the initial verdict, namely large protests across Spain, I hope to unveil a ...

Latino, Latina, Latin@, Latine, And Latinx: Gender Inclusive Oral Expression In Spanish, Katie Slemp

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Gender identity is a rapidly changing concept and so is the language that we use to talk about ourselves or others that may identify outside of the traditional binary system. Spanish typically functions as a masculine generic-dominated language, but there are attempts to make the language more inclusive. One of those attempts appeared in the early 2000s: -x. This marker is unpronounceable as a syllable nucleus. Via an online survey and virtual interviews, this project discovers how Spanish speakers from various countries incorporate gender inclusive language (IL) in writing and speech. Which speakers incorporate IL? Additionally, why do they use ...

Perceived Object-Gender In The Bilingual Acquisition Of Spanish And English, Kevin Edgell 2020 Oakland University

Perceived Object-Gender In The Bilingual Acquisition Of Spanish And English, Kevin Edgell

The Macksey Journal

81818app手机版下载This study set out to determine whether cross-linguistic interference with respect to object-gender association could be observed in the bilingual acquisition of Spanish and English. I present data that supports the existence of this type of interference. The study gathered data from 10 children, four English monolinguals, four English-Spanish bilinguals, and two Spanish monolinguals. The children were all close in age ranging from 3;04 to 4;07. The study consisted of two separate tasks: name-to-picture matching and naming. Every child was asked to complete each task twice. For the monolingual children, all of the tasks were conducted in their ...

Code-Switching In L2 Spanish: A Comparison Of French And English Learners, Liliana Montoya 2020 The University of Western Ontario 81818app手机版下载

Code-Switching In L2 Spanish: A Comparison Of French And English Learners, Liliana Montoya

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

81818app手机版下载This dissertation investigates whether L2 Spanish learners’ grammar intuitions on code-switching (CS) show evidence of the predictions made by the Functional Head Constraint (FHC) proposed by Belazi, Rubin, & Toribio (1994). Building on this theory, the present work supports the idea that L2 learners have an intuitive sense of code-switching well-formedness, i.e., they count on unconscious grammatical principles to produce code-switched utterances as well as to assess their grammaticality. Our primary research question is: given the usual absence of CS input that classroom L2 learners receive, will their grammar intuitions on CS show evidence of the predictions made by the FHC? In order to answer this question, we carried out two experiments with two different groups of L2 Spanish learners: native speakers of English and French with different level of proficiency in the L2.

81818app手机版下载In Experiment 1, we used an Acceptability Judgment Task (AJT) administered in Toribio (2001a) to evaluate participants’ grammatical intuitions on (un)grammatical switching boundaries. In Experiment 2 we employed two tasks to have two types of experimental data: A Self-paced Reading Task (SPRT) which looked at participants’ real time processing, and an AJT to observe their grammatical intuitions.

Confirming our hypothesis and in line with the FHC, we found that participants have accurate grammar intuitions about CS. These results are consistent with previous studies (Toribio, 2001a; Dussias, 2003; Koronkiewicz, 2018; Giancaspro, 2013, 2015) at proving that L2 learners exhibit linguistic knowledge of the structural restrictions in CS. The analysis per groups further showed that both the English and French intermediate learners’ exhibited more accurate acceptability responses than the beginner group. Intermediate L2 Spanish learners distinguished between grammatical and ungrammatical CS while beginners had problems recognizing grammaticality especially in switches after modal/auxiliary, quantifier, preposition and adjectives. Results obtained ...

Literatura Viva: Formas De Conocer La Literatura Y Agricultura Desde Chiapas, Jesse Nichols 2020 Portland State University

Literatura Viva: Formas De Conocer La Literatura Y Agricultura Desde Chiapas, Jesse Nichols

Dissertations and Theses

Literatura Viva reflects the links between agriculture and literature in Chiapas, Mexico, demonstrating how the ways of knowing the environment which are culturally expressed through literature and the practices of sustainable agriculture are deeply linked. It argues that the experience of the agricultural working class is central not just to a physical movement towards tangible agricultural change but to a society's ability to understand its socio-cultural and natural environment. The thesis first explores indigenous literature, then agricultural practices and finally educational movements which seek to express pluriversal understandings and ways of interacting with the planet. It argues that these ...

Memorias | Electronic Literature + Live Coding Performance, Jessica A. Rodriguez Miss, Rolando Rodriguez, Alejandro Brianza, Luis M. Guzman

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Memorias is a web-based artistic project by Jessica Rodríguez developed through the Estuary platform —an online platform to host live coding languages. It is based in six autobiographical writings connected to the way she “hears”, “writes”, “watches”, “reads”, “sees” and “listens” to the word. Through these texts, six code works were designed and programmed, hybridizing natural and computing languages by parsing three existing live coding languages: Tidal Cycles, Punctual, and CineCer0.

Together, Memorias’ languages collide different materialities as well as visual and sonic approaches, going from voices in English, Spanish, Cello and Paetzold samples, audio and visual synthesis, and pre-recorded ...

The Networked Fictional Narrative: Seriality And Adaptations In Popular Television And New Media., Nandita Dutta

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

From creating elaborate fan-worlds to driving large amounts of revenue into the economy, popular culture has proved to be the motivation behind, as well a reflection of, large scale acquisitions of conglomerates that have governed popular interests since the mid-20th Century. If its movements across geographic space, time, and media can be traced, popular culture production is an apt subject of research into how a cultural entity is conceptualised, transported and appropriated within another. In this study, adaptations of fictional products in the 20th and 21st Centuries are considered as manifestations of neobaroque forms of culture production and consumption. Some ...

Second Language Comprehensibility As A Dynamic Construct, Pavel Trofimovich, Charles L. Nagle, Mary G. O'Brien, Sara Kennedy, Kym Taylor Reid, Lauren Strachan

World Languages and Cultures Publications

81818app手机版下载This study examined longitudinal changes in second language (L2) interlocutors’ mutual comprehensibility ratings (perceived ease of understanding speech), targeting comprehensibility as a dynamic, time-varying, inter action-centered construct. In a repeated-measures, within-participants design, 20 pairs of L2 English university students from different language backgrounds engaged in three collaborative and interactive tasks over 17 minutes, rating their partner’s comprehensibility at 2–3 minute intervals using 100-millimeter scales (seven ratings per interlocutor). Mutual comprehensibility ratings followed a U-shaped function over time, with comprehensibility (initially perceived to be high) being affected by task complexity but then reaching high levels by the end of ...

Expanding The Scope Of L2 Intelligibility Research, Charles Nagle, Amanda Huensch

World Languages and Cultures Publications

81818app手机版下载This study investigated relationships among intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness in the speech of L2 learners of Spanish who completed a prompted response speaking task. Thirty native Spanish listeners from Spain were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk to transcribe and rate extracted utterances, which were also coded for grammatical and phonemic errors, and speaking rate. Descriptively, although most utterances were intelligible, their comprehensibility and accentedness varied substantially. Mixed-effects modeling showed that comprehensibility was significantly associated with intelligibility whereas accentedness was not. Additionally, phonemic and grammatical errors were significant predictors of intelligibility and comprehensibility, but only phonemic errors were significantly related to ...

(Un) Continuity In E-Lit In Portuguese And Spanish, Vinicius Carvalho Pereira, Tina Escaja

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

The creation of digital literature in Portuguese and Spanish has shown a constant engagement with fluidity and change. Whereas the topics developed in e-lit in Portuguese and Spanish have shown a continuum as manifested by the use of metaphors to represent popular culture, high culture and gender issues, the media used to express those concepts has shown (un)continuity by relying in new digital means that open up new possibilities of expression, representation and dissemination. The two papers in this panel explore how e-lit provides a new medium to present the myth of the labyrinth in digital poems that challenge ...

Borderless Flows In Federspiel’S Die Ballade Von Der Typhoid Mary, Charlotte Melin

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Jürg Federspiel’s novel Die Ballade von der Typhoid Mary (1982) offers a fictionalized account of the notorious heroine’s life that ultimately sympathizes with her plight as an immigrant who faced exclusionary cultural barriers. Drawing on Rob Nixon’s concept of “slow violence” and recent approaches developed by material ecocriticism theory, my essay reinterprets this work from an environmental humanities perspective. The interpretation focuses on the interconnection of discourses related to disease, food, and pollution flows. Exploration of these themes leads to the conclusion that Federspiel’s work was prescient in its parallel engagement with both immigration issues and ...

Poetry For Seers Or The Peruvian Visual Poetic Tradition In Front Of New Media, Michael Hurtado, Pamela Medina, Enrique García, Michael Prado

Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2020

Since the first decades of the twentieth century, Peruvian poetic tradition has been characterized by experimental uses of language. Among these possibilities, some records tensioned this medium from the link with the plastic arts, as in the case of the poetry of José María Eguren, while others opted for the playing with the spatiality and visuality of the blank sheet, such as in the case of the work of Carlos Oquendo de Amat. However, it is not until the appearance of the poetry of César Vallejo, specifically with a poems like Trilce in 1922, that these breakages force us to ...
