Fall Detection: Threshold Analysis Of Wrist-Worn Motion Sensor Signals, Michael J. Wolfe, Jospeh Caguioa, Andy Nguyen, Jacquelyn Cheun PhD 2020 Southern Methodist University

Fall Detection: Threshold Analysis Of Wrist-Worn Motion Sensor Signals, Michael J. Wolfe, Jospeh Caguioa, Andy Nguyen, Jacquelyn Cheun Phd

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we present a detection algorithm that accurately differentiates the event of a person falling from normal Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Our algorithm processes signals recorded from accelerometers and gyroscopes built into wearable activity monitoring devices such as smart watches that are worn on an individual’s wrist. Existing algorithms are accurate but imprecise, and rely too much on inconveniently-placed sensors. We propose a pipeline that improves precision without sacrificing accuracy and ease of use. We present the use of a combination of threshold-based and machine learning-based approaches to develop a refined fall-detection algorithm that builds upon ...

Paving A Path To Privatization: The History Of Health Care In Detroit, Yasmeen Berry 2020 Henry Ford College

Paving A Path To Privatization: The History Of Health Care In Detroit, Yasmeen Berry

The Macksey Journal

The aim of this study is to provide insight into the privatization of the public Detroit General Hospital. The reasoning and objections behind giving the only public hospital at the time to a private company are examined. The benefits of privatization were more efficient care, less costs for the city government, more up-to-date equipment, and more competition between hospitals (which supposedly would lead to better health care). However, health care has become more expensive; there has been a loss of public jobs, disassembling of unions, and a larger health equity gap. In addition to this assessment, an evaluation of the ...

Forgetting The American Family: How The Family And Medical Leave Act Is Insufficient And What Can Be Done To Improve It, Adrianna Thrasher

Senior Honors Theses

This research seeks to clarify the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 and explore where the Act is deficient. In addition, federal policy is compared with states that currently have a more generous paid leave program. In the interest of the effect this issue has on American global competitiveness, United States (U.S.) policy will be examined in reference to peer nations. This analytical approach aims to resolve common misconceptions surrounding federal paid family leave policy, as well as clear a path for more progressive policies overall.

Insights Into The Practice Of Palliative Sedation: A Literature Review, Mara P. Zimmerman 2020 State University of New York College at Brockport

Insights Into The Practice Of Palliative Sedation: A Literature Review, Mara P. Zimmerman

Senior Honors Theses

81818app手机版下载Terminal illness and the concept of death and dying are sensitive topics, especially when relating them to the people we hold near and dear. Unfortunately, along with the end of life comes an unsurmountable amount of pain and suffering for people facing serious illness. For patients with a terminal illness, palliative and hospice care treatment measures are implemented to manage symptoms, provide peace, and enhance the quality of the final days of life. Palliative sedation is one of these measures. It will be explored in depth in order to gain a greater understanding of the treatment options available during this ...

Approaches To Treatment Of Schizophrenia As A Function Of Evolving Stigma, Jacqueline Webster 2020 State University of New York College at Brockport

Approaches To Treatment Of Schizophrenia As A Function Of Evolving Stigma, Jacqueline Webster

Senior Honors Theses

81818app手机版下载In the early twentieth century, Eugen Bleuler coined the term Schizophrenia for a mental disturbance which he noted as being characterized by a separation of emotion and thought (Pridmore, 2016). Bleuler believed the defining feature of Schizophrenia to be a disorganized change in thought (Pridmore, 2016). Today, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) states that Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that is typically severe and often long lasting, characterized by both disturbed thought and behavior.

An Investigation Into The Role Of Arf6 In Mch-Mediated Rearrangements In 3t3-L1 Preadipocytes, Bohdan Smich 2020 State University of New York College at Brockport

An Investigation Into The Role Of Arf6 In Mch-Mediated Rearrangements In 3t3-L1 Preadipocytes, Bohdan Smich

Senior Honors Theses

Obesity has become a pandemic in our society. One potential method to alleviate this crisis is the use of pharmaceutical therapy to manage how our bodies metabolize the energy that we consume. Chronic overconsumption can lead to the activation of inflammatory responses and metabolic dysregulation, such as insulin resistance, and promote the obese condition. The pathways involved in the motility of pre-adipocyte cells are important in understanding how our bodies interpret and react to specific biochemical signals. This research is focused on a pathway that activates the expansion and migration of pre-adipocytes. Melanin-concentrating Hormone (MCH) is a neuropeptide that is ...

Searching For New Medications For The Treatment Of Alcohol Use Disorder, Harley M. Buechler

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects more than 15 million people in the United States. Current pharmacotherapeutic treatments for AUD are only modestly effective, necessitating the identification of new targets for medications development. In this study, the effects of the D4 receptor antagonist, L-745,870, and the CB1 negative allosteric modulator, PSNCBAM-1, were both tested for effects in ethanol conditioned place preference (CPP) and oral ethanol self-administration. Food-restricted adult male mice were trained in operant chambers to nose poke for delivery of rewards, trained on ascending concentrations of alcohol with descending concentrations of Ensure and water, until the mixture self-administered was ...

Multiple Myeloma With Intracranial And Spinal Intradural Metastasis: A Case Report, Der-Cherng Chen, Wei-Lin Hsu

BioMedicine

81818app手机版下载Multiple myeloma is a hematopoietic cancer that is multicentric and most commonly involves the spine. Multiple myeloma with extraosseous and intradural involvement is an extremely rare condition. Here we present a rare case of spinal multiple myeloma with intracranial and spinal intradural metastasis causing lumbar spinal nerve compression. We present a 60-year-old woman with progressive weakness of the lower limbs for several weeks. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a leptomeningeal tumor with nodularity spreading within the cauda equina. Examination of the brain using MRI showed a lytic skull bone lesion and leptomeningeal enhancement. The patient underwent L3-5 laminectomy. Immunohistological ...
