Reconciliation And Resistance From The Ground Up: The Power Of Affect In Chicago’S Community Gardens, Olivia Lee 2020 The University of Illinois at Chicago

Reconciliation And Resistance From The Ground Up: The Power Of Affect In Chicago’S Community Gardens, Olivia Lee

The Macksey Journal

81818app手机版下载Chicago is the second city -- after Milwaukee in segregation. In the low-income, primarily black neighborhoods on the South Side of the city, community gardens are a spatial break with and grassroots activism against the grim landscape of economic, structural, and physical violence. But what is the gardens’ social valence when they seem unable to countervail the ongoing history of marginalization by race and socioeconomic status? Drawing on affect theory, I illustrate how the slow and uneventful healing of personal tragedies in Chicago’s community gardens is quiet, nascent resistance against neoliberal, post-racial injustices. In a society where the relationship between ...

Beds For Rent: Economic Motives Of County Jail Expansion 1970 - Present, Anna Duan

The Macksey Journal

81818app手机版下载For the last four decades, incarceration in the United States has risen in areas where few would expect: rural ex-mining and agricultural counties with low crime rates. In response, a body of literature has emerged revealing a nationwide trend in which declining counties invest in correctional facilities as a last-ditch economic revitalization strategy. However, researchers have focused on state and federal prison construction projects while neglecting the impact of county jails on growing rural incarceration rates. Since the 1970s, hundreds of counties have expanded their jails to house federal inmates. As jails are the first stage of incarceration, policies concerning ...

Economics Of Carbon Capture And Storage For Small Scale Hydrogen Generation For Transit Refueling Stations, Peter Psarras, Mark Henning, Andrew R. Thomas 2020 Exaere Consulting

Economics Of Carbon Capture And Storage For Small Scale Hydrogen Generation For Transit Refueling Stations, Peter Psarras, Mark Henning, Andrew R. Thomas

Urban Publications

Refueling infrastructure for early adopters of hydrogen vehicles finally appears to be imminent. There is a consensus among long haul trucking and transit agencies that hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles are likely to be the most cost-effective strategy for transitioning to low or zero emission fuels, especially in cold weather climates. Hydrogen refueling stations will require careful planning to ensure costs are low and that carbon dioxide emissions are minimized. Until such time that refueling stations are commonplace, the most likely scenario for mitigating both costs and carbon intensity will be local, on site hydrogen generation at the refueling stations ...

Engaging Neighbors: Housing Strategies And Political Mobilization In Moscow's Renovation, Anna Zhelnina

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In summer 2017, residents of thousands of socialist-era apartment buildings in Moscow were invited to vote and decide whether their building should be included in the demolition and relocation program proposed by the Mayor’s Office. Renovation is an ongoing urban renewal plan, first announced in Moscow in February 2017, to demolish whole neighborhoods of socialist-era, five-story buildings and replace them with high-rises. The vast project affected more than 5,000 buildings with approximately a million inhabitants.

This dissertation addresses general questions of political agency and the possibility for diverse people in urban neighborhoods to produce change: to achieve desired ...

Urban Warfare: Emerging Geopolitical Conundrum, Bert Chapman 2020 Purdue University

Urban Warfare: Emerging Geopolitical Conundrum, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Urban warfare is as old as human history. It is becoming increasingly important in international political and military planning due to increasing global urbanization and the presence of megacities (urban areas with populations exceeding 10 million) in many global regions and being in areas of recent and potential military conflict. 2018 World Bank data notes that approximately 56% of the world's population lives in urban areas which is up from 34% in 1960. Many of these megacities, including New York City, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Shanghai, and Manila are adjacent to oceanic waters and vulnerable to trade and ...
